Check each noun to see if it is countable, uncountable, or abstract, and used the correct article.
Has the writer fully interpreted the findings? If material was paraphrased, are the sources still mentioned? Before you begin, be sure to model and discuss each step of the writing process prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishingpreferably using a whole-class story or class newsletter article.
Are there sufficient transitions between related ideas? It is helpful to put the editing checklist on an overhead projector or document camera so all students can see the process. Model the use of the self-edit column with the displayed text, with you assuming the role of author.
If included, are recommendations based on accurate interpretations? Has the writer avoided insulting the reader? Does the essay move from general to specific? Make sure sequencing is logical and effective. They usually know to check for grammar, punctuation, and spelling, but other details are often seen as less important because of the high emphasis placed on these problems in their early education.
Finally, discuss what went well and what could be improved in the editing steps that were modeled. After the self-edit is complete, discuss the process with the students. Use the simple past tense to describe things that finished in the past. Please note that the revising stage precedes editing.
The interaction between peers will help make the editing process more explicit. Include only relevant information. Student should have already worked through content revisions before reaching the editing step. Is the length appropriate and adequate?
