This award recognizes the lifelong contributions to academic excellence at Ohio State Marion by Mr. Contemporary Appalachian Nature Writing. Students are recognized for their creative writing achievements in fiction, non—fiction, and poetry and chosen by judges who are published writers outside of the Ohio State Marion community.

Each of the recipients — past, present, and future — has been recognized for their outstanding and unique contribution towards the ongoing success and growth of The Ohio State University at Marion and its students and plays a special role in the rich history of this campus.

The remaining hours consist of other appropriate departmental course offerings. Joseph was born in the Philippines. The MFA in Creative Writing consists of 42 hours, 12 in workshop, 3 in Craft and Forms, and 15 of other appropriate departmental course offerings.

This area is designed to assess knowledge of close reading and craft. We enjoy working closely with student writers, and we limit enrollment in graduate workshops to 12 students.

The award is determined by a faculty honors committee and is based on an application from the candidates, faculty recommendations, grade point averages, and student research. Kay Davis Engineering Award annually recognizes up to three students who are pursuing an engineering degree, beginning their college career at Ohio State Marion.

This award was made possible by a gift from Oliver Hamilton. Emphasizing the importance of craft and grounding the practice of artistic writing in knowledge of the literary tradition and its active presence in contemporary culture, we offer individualized attention to students in small classes maximum enrollment 12 at the graduate level, 18 or fewer for undergraduatesand eligibility for competitive scholarships specifically designated for creative writers.

Currently there are about 50 students enrolled in our graduate program, with roughly equal numbers in poetry and in prose. Doctoral students have the option of testing in the Practical Poetics and Fictional Rhetoric comprehensive examination area.

This award is presented to students developing their individual potential to the fullest by engaging in challenging coursework, seeking out academic programs that have breadth and depth, and interacting with professors and students in intellectual contexts.

Hamilton History Award is presented to a junior or senior History major with the highest grade point average. Our students consistently go on to publish well, take advanced degrees at the most highly respected graduate programs in the nation, and succeed as mature professionals.

The nomination of a student by his or her college is a high honor due to the very limited number of students selected for this recognition. The 12 remaining hours are for thesis preparation. Graduate students in creative writing submit original creative works prefaced by a critical introduction rather than a scholarly thesis or dissertation.

These awards are funded by contributions to The Howard Honors Fund. Each year, the colleges of the university are asked to nominate a select group of honors undergraduates who are exemplary students as demonstrated by their performance, curriculum, and related experiences.

PhD students may take one of their two comprehensive exams in Practical Poetics, Fictional Rhetoric, or Theory and Practice of Creative Nonfiction—areas specifically designed for creative writers.

Graduate workshops and classes in Craft and Forms cover a wide range of topics important to working writers, with readings in published poetry and prose assigned to students to accompany critical workshop discussion of their own work.

Chosen by the faculty, the recipient of this award is not announced until the awards program. Upper-division electives account for 17 hours. Faculty, staff, and students are asked to nominate students for the inaugural year of this award.

Separate awards are given for the best paper written by a freshman or sophomore and by a junior or senior.
